I Need Your Help!

Here is a photo of my grandfather Ralph Sever circa 1937.

The S between Scott and Heywood stands for Sever.

Grandfather Sever was a die-hard fisherman… I thank him for that! He taught me a lot about fishing! Please notice he is wearing a tie. When we went fishing in northern Michigan, this is how my grandfather dressed... think about that next time you don your fishing apparel!

I want to figure out where my grandfather was and what species of fish this is. I think this might be a yellowtail, but I can't quite tell. Does anyone know where this is or what fish this might be. His daughter, Carol Baumhardt, thinks this might be in California and he was fishing with a cousin who lived in Whittier, CA.
PLEASE, can anyone help identify the location or the fish?!

  1. That really looks like Ledbetter Point in Santa Barbara to me and I'm pretty sure it's a white seabass...I used to live right near there, and surfed and fished there frequently.

    1. ...forgot to add, the beach looked significantly different in the 30's than it does now!

    2. Great, I didn't consider white sea bass. Are they that long in body? I've never caught one, but it looks like now I'll have to give it a try!

    3. I'm positive that's a seabass after looking at it again, the shadow in the image makes the fish look thicker than it is, but they are typically long-bodied and can get really big, check out google for images. They are tougher to come by than most fish in Southern CA, but they are absolutely delicious! When I lived there the minimum size was something like 26-28", I'd double-check the regs if you plan on keeping one...

  2. given he had a cousin in Whittier, and the way the coast wraps around behind him, my guess would be somewhere along the bluffs of Palos Verdes. Malaga cove, Lunada Bay...
